You can likely only block 1-2 hits with a decent stability medium shield against a lot of bosses. With greatshields you can often block entire combos. Greatshields in general are often ridiculously powerful against bosses but are often overlooked.

Plus, you can guard counter on a shield that can parry, so you have that as an option whenever the other doesn't feel like the right choice. The only, only drawback to guard counters is that it's not dual wielding. The L1 button was made so strong that it had to be nerfed, and other playstyles buffed, for there to be any semblance of fairness. I really enjoy a reactive countering gameplay style in my melee games, so I was very pleased to find out that ER offers just that with its guard-counter mechanics. I was wondering what type of weapon is best suited for this type of playstyle. My current build is heavy armour + Eclipse Greatshield (I love that BOING sound when enemies hit it and stagger off it).
