Have a few million in the bank and own a few towns in good locations (i.e., not scattered all over the map). My strategy is usually: wait till somebody else declares war on your enermy and peace out. I wanted to get Trade to 300 and *buy* my own kingdom, but I can't do that before the main quest timer expires. You can still make your own kingdom after the "main quest" expires.
