Thoughts on Automatic Bonus Progression, and specifically Skill Potency. Firstly, and briefly, attack/defense/saving ...

Hi all, In the Gamemastery Guide (pg 196) there is a variant rule for magic items that applies an automatic bonus progression by level. It uses a new bonus type called "potency". I am getting some odd results using this bonus type. The ABP is meant to free up 'Characters' to buy more interesting items while providing a set of bonuses to cover the 'bases'. While it may not be game breaking it opens up to many other avenues of exploitation to allows 'Companions' of any kind to benefit from those boons. 1. Share.

Honestly automatic bonus progression just sticks it to martials. It's super bad for them, anything that helps them out is good. ABP is good for everyone but especially good for martial classes. When you depend on a weapon to do all your fighting, you depend on loot.

I'd argue it's low magic that makes equipment feel more irrelevant since that's where things get interesting, but you can mitigate that by giving out Runes manually instead of them buying them. 17 votes, 38 comments. I recently started my first Pathfinder campaign in a low magic setting and the ABP rule keeps the math intact without the need…. Automatic Bonus Progression is a good salve, but that misses out on the cool parts of specific magical weapons/items, and should be considered carefully imho. It only removes the number bonuses, which are the boring parts of specific magic items. I don't consider the fundamental runes that the game assumes you get cool at all, personally.

Animal Companions have been a staple thematic element of druids and rangers since at least 3rd edition DnD. In more mechanical terms, an Animal Companion is a powerful addition to your character’s ...Lastly, take a look at Automatic Bonus Progression (ABP). 5e isn’t balanced around magic items, so they are mostly just cool items the party will get, while PF2e magic items are baked into the math of martials. Adding onto what this person said, it might be a good idea to just implement the automatic bonus progression rules if you're new to GMing PF2E and just ditch fundamental runes altogether. There will still be plenty of treasure to hand out, and it's one less thing for you to worry about. Armor specialization isn't automated yet. Closing because the feature request to automate that is handled by another issue already but also because we implement ABP RAW, and suggest people tell Paizo to please fix their poorly written rules, or use the Automatic Rune Progression module to do what they think ABP should do anyways. I have used ABP in AoA and works fine. You just need to ignore the loot of fundamental runes and the objects that only give bonus to skills (if they do somethin else you can leave it there). It's not an Adventure Path, but I used an ABP Variant in Malevolence. The loot there is just atrocious.

The choices are weapon (which just gets autoscaling rune bonuses), handwraps of mighty blows (same as weapon), magic staff (a personal staff as secrets of magic), or a shield (auto upgrading sturdy shield)Lastly, Skill Potency. Oh, Skill Potency. This is obviously subjective, but my players and I looked at this part and thought the same thing; this is a whole lot of words and things to keep track of that aren't on a normal character sheet.
